11:16pm: It's 11:16 and I need to get my person to bed! Not that I have anything super exciting to report today - thinks for a bit... Yeah I got nothing.

The weather has turned towards Spring, it's supposed to be in the mid-20s and beyond this weekend, which is kind of a worry because I'm pretty sure it's still winter-time, technically. Although I did hear that a cold front might come in mid-next week, so who knows what the climate is doing?

There was some good news today actually! A few days ago a baby humpback whale got stuck in some fishing line, but mid afternoon today the marine rescue people managed to free him from the line and direct him back out of the harbour to the open ocean to continue on his migration. I wonder why he was in the harbour in the first place, maybe taking a break from swimming? Who knows, but I'm glad he made it. The last few times whales have been on the news the outlook has not been so good.

So yeah, happy animal news always brightens the day :O)

But as mentioned it's late and I have to head to work tomorrow, so I better Meme and run!

The Friday Five

23/8/24

These questions were written by Dreamwidth user goddess47, who adds: "if you're not in the US, change the dates to your country's last election."

1. If you are old enough, are you registered to vote? I am indeed! I don't remember actually registering, but I must have because my little bro didn't register himself so missed out on voting in some election. By not registering though he didn't get a letter warning that he was going to be fined since voting is compulsory in Aussieland.

2. Did you vote in the November 2023 election 2022 Election? I forget what actual day it was, but yes since as above it's compulsory, although I'd like to think that I would vote even if it wasn't, because that's how you get your voice heard.

3. Do you vote in primaries? Don't have those here, the party decides who will be their leader, which is why, particularly in past years there's been different Prime Ministers here without a vote.

4. Do you plan to vote in the November September 2024 election? This is actually a Council Election, but it's still compulsory, it's also caused more bruhahah than usual because the Liberal Party (note: not actual liberal, they're conservatives in Aus) actually forgot to enroll their 140 of their candidates in various council electorates. So yeah...talk about an own goal there. Although party alignment doesn't matter as much in Council Elections, still are their faces red!

5. Do you vote early, by mail, in person, or some other way? I tend to vote early in person, because they often have a polling booth in the Community space above the library, so I figure what the Hell. However, you can't vote early in Council elections, so I'm gonna need to do that on the day. Which fortunately is a Saturday in Aus because of the whole compulsory ting.

Right better run.

Goodnight!

11:13pm: Indeed! I'm pretty sure I didn't mention it last entry, but earlier in the month while driving to the new apartment to drop stuff off I heard some startling news on the radio.

Namely the rink that I ice skate at was going to close down next year!

At first I thought I misheard, they only refurbished the place a little over a year ago, fixing up the pipes and redoing the whole ice surface, adding a gym and all that.

They even had the Australian National Figure Skating Championships there in December (which I sadly didn't get to because I had a terrible panic attack while trying to drive there, but let's not relive that :OP)! Plus the whole reason given by the owners of the shopping centre where the rink is made no sense! They claimed that by demolishing the rink they'd be able to provide better access to the bus and train stations, except those stations are less than 100m away. I mean unless they were planning to have the trains and buses go right through the middle of the shopping centre that's just BS.

Anyway, the skating community was outraged! Without this rink, there's nowhere to skate on the northern side of Sydney. All those kids and adults who take lessons would probably have to give up the sport - or travel two hours or more to get to another rink in Sydney (there's only three others and none of them are Olympic size like Macquarie).

Fortunately, there was an outpouring of support for the rink to remain, even politicians got involved (well it is an election year :OP), I signed a couple of petitions and sent emails myself and then the good news came through today!

The Rink is saved! Yaaaay!

This is indeed very happy news! I don't get to the rink as much as I like because of the issues I have with driving some times and the thought of time ticking down where I'd have chance to go skating was pretty disheartening.

Power to the people!

Anywho, on that good note I shall wrap this up - I have to go to bed - it's been a busy day, I've had two separate visitors to the apartment, my godmother Wendy and my old, old landlord (and Mum's friend). They were both very impressed by the place, which I've been taking good care of so far. Keep it clean, me :O)

Right goodnight all!

11:10pm: Yes indeed, it's been nearly a month since my last update! I've really been letting my Dreamwidth down haven't I? It's not as if nothing's been going on, in fact I've been quite busy with extra shifts from the library and caught up with some old friends. Actually, this weekend I'll be catching up with more old friends Edith and Elva from high school! (It's interesting because I always mixed up their names even though I knew who I was talking to in my brain, my mouth would say the wrong name - the ass) Elva lives overseas now so this is quite an occasion! In fact I'm taking the day off work this Sunday for it. I'm very relieved I can do that actually because apparently the actual rule at work is you need to give 10 days notice to take leave (even if it's just for one day), that seems like BS, I mean not everything gets planned weeks in advance.

Speaking of work, it's getting a bit alarming just how many people have left or been transferred to another library in the system. The staff area down the back is practically empty these days, yet I remain without a permanent job. In fact, one of the staff they hired externally has just gone off on a month long holiday the second they got hired. In what world does that make sense? This person better have a lot of experience - although they're still going to need to learn the new system, which I'd liked to point out I don't need to do. Grumble, grumble.

Moving on, how epic was the rescue of the Thai Boys from the cave?! I can't believe they all made it! When I first heard about it on the news I didn't have much hope at all, but everyone banded together and got them out, a good news story for sure. :O)

Sadly, there's also very distressing news...last Thursday a very popular figure skater Denis Ten from Kazhistan (the first to win a medal at the Olympics - a Bronze back in 2014) was murdered in a robbery. I followed him on Instagram and the whole thing is still a terrible shock, very upsetting and surreal. His last post was only a short time before his death and it was very sad to see it there in the Instagram stories until it disappeared. I wasn't like a huge fan or anything, but the whole thing is just totally messed up (the robbers were trying to steal his car mirrors, who kills someone over that?!) and a total waste. :O(

In happy news, it's now just one week until my parents return! Actually less than one week since they'll be home next Tuesday in the late morning. I'm looking forward to seeing them, it's been like three months an I'm sure they'll have lots of stories and whatnot. Although I have to clean my father's car because it's been parked in their carport this whole time - except for the few times I've taken it out to keep it's battery going - and it's got all dusty and salty.

Right, it's getting late so I should head off - I've been watching Le Tour De France while I'm typing this and a guy just rode off the road and into a ravine! Thankfully he's OK, but geeze that was a shock. Also...this is the same route where 23 years ago a cyclist in the race died, seems a poor choice of route honestly.

OK, I'm going to wrap this up because I do need to get my shut eye.

Goodnight all!

11:34pm: Because I totally forgot to update you all with a good news story, the sort that makes one have faith in humanity. Two Fridays ago, Mrs S lost her wallet when the strap broke, and to add to the horribleness of this situation she had $400 of her mother's money in it which she was going to convert into US dollars (long story)!

When I came in on Monday she had decided to call the local police station to see if maybe it had been handed it, but alas...it was not there. I convinced her to try the other police station, which is near the bus stop, since maybe someone picked up the wallet and then ran to the bus before dropping it off. But no luck there either. :O(

Thoroughly depressing, yes? But as I'm sure you can gather from my title, that is not the end of the story! On Thursday Mrs S was in Dee Why where the second police station is and on a whim decided to pop in in person to see about the wallet.

And the wallet was there!! Somehow it hadn't been entered into the compute system - which is supposed to be done and since the system is connected it shouldn't matter which cop shop you call - and the wallet had been sitting there the whole week! However, the police officer didn't hold much hope the $400 would be in it because all lost wallets are checked for money and if its in there, they'll put it in the safe.

But when Mrs S opened it and reached into the cash compartment the money was there! Miracle! And how nice! I mean if I found a wallet with money in it I'd have turned it in without taking it, but you can't always depend on that. Once I lost my wallet and someone stuck it in a post box and Australia Post was nice enough send it on to me, but alas the money that had been inside it was gone.

So hooray! It was a Happy Friday when I came in and she told me what had gone down. Good news indeed, otherwise Mrs S was going to have replace that money herself!

In other news, I went over to M and Grandpa's house on Saturday for Canasta, I started off really well! But lo and behold as usual M rallied and won the game! I think Grandpa is her lucky charm, he was out at golf when I arrived, but he got back at which point M started winning. Oh well, kicking my butt at Canasta always cheers M up which is a good thing since she's recently had to get a wheelchair to get around, not to mention general stiffness and whatnot. So I'm happy to do my part...although I still wish I could win, LOL! ;O)

Anyway, I better wrap this up, it's almost midnight!

Before I go though one last thing, the Paralympic Games is currently on (although we're hardly getting any coverage, booo!) and great news, one of our men got a gold! Our first in 16 years! His name is Simon Pattmore and he's also got a medal from a Summer Games too! Brilliant news! Sure wish we had more coverage though...judging Channel 7 right now.

Right, and now I bid you all, goodnight!

Social Day!

Oct. 8th, 2017 11:15 pm
anonymoose_au: (Pinkie Pie Bounce!)
11:01pm: Yes indeed! Not only was this morning the get together for my uncle's birthday (usually it would be for my aunt too as her birthday is actually today, but she's sick so couldn't come), but since I took the day off work I went to my friend's house in the afternoon.

The family get-together was great! I made mini-blueberry muffins and we had breakfast with sausages, toast, eggs and tomatoes (although I didn't eat those :OP) and a good time was had by all.

It was also great seeing my friend again, since I've been slacking on contacting her so it's been like a few months since I've seen her last, despite the fact she lives like only ten minutes away, shame on me! Hopefully, we'll be able to see each other a bit more often, although since I work on the weekends and like to go skating on Saturday afternoons and I've been getting those extra shifts it's harder than you'd think to find a good time.

The only downside of today is hayfever is attacking me like whoa right now...at least I hope it's hayfever, it better not be another cold (knock on wood!) Mrs S will never let me live it down if it is, plus I don't need that shit.

But I think it is, because it all started yesterday when I used the fan rather than the air-conditioner in my car, I think the fan takes in air from outside rather than air that's all ready in the car and I got a face full of pollen because my nose was itchy and runny. Then today it's all stuffy, and my ears are itchy. I've been meaning to use my nose spray, but I can't find it! I'm hesitant to take an actual hayfever tablet because whilst they do work my eyeballs end up so dry I end up with a terrible headache. I may have to give in a take one so I can get some sleep, perhaps it won't be so bothersome if my eyeballs are closed.

Speaking of bed, I have to hit the hay right now because I haven't been getting enough sleep the last few days what with the ice skating and it doesn't take much for a lack of sleep to get to me. :OP Also, it's that time o' the month, grumble grumble.

So on that note I'll be off! But all in all it was a great day, I even got to see the little bro, it's been a while and I was really happy to hear he's given up smoking, yay!

And now I'm off.

Goodnight all!

11:27pm: So yesterday I decided to buy that 2-in-1 laptop from Aldi because, it seemed like a good idea and the parental units were on board. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but...alas it just wasn't right. In that it the screen was too small, so all the text was tiny and even when I tried to zoom in it just wasn't right. Maybe it wasn't related but later in the night I had such horrible headache, seriously, it was killing me!

Also, the screen flickered when I got on Tumblr and the touch screen wasn't quite receptive enough - although I guess I should have expected that one, it's not top-market after all. So I decided to return it, which is allowed, except there was one small issue...the laptop came with a year's subscription to Microsoft Office so I activated it. I think it might be attached to my email now...which means even though I've returned the computer the next person who buys it won't be able to use the subscription! I did go to the Microsoft website to try and sort it out, they told me not worry , though I'm not sure that's true.

I feel bad about that, I gotta say. Maybe I should look into it again tomorrow.

Aside from computer related sheninigans yesterday was a good day! It was a public holiday so I didn't have to get to Mrs S's place until 9:30 and then I finished early and went to the parental abode for lunch with the parental units and the little bro. Not only was lunch delicious, the little bro had some good news, not only is work going well, he's decided to quit smoking. Yay! :OD It seems to be going well for him so far, so fingers crossed that goes on.

I spent the night at the parentals so Mum and I could watch our show - it's a hilarious topical game show, ah we laugh so hard.

Which makes me bummed that for the next two weeks I'll be watching it on my own because Mum and Dad are off to Japan to visit the big bro. Sniff, them's the brakes I guess, I'm sure they'll have fun, I'm not sure if I mentioned but they'll be doing some tourist stuff like going to an onsen.

I really should get going because it's ten minutes to midnight and I've got work tomorrow! I had work today actually, because Mrs S said her other carer wanted to meet me and that I should probably show her a few things and also to help rearrange a room...although the whole room thing ended up being a bust, LOL. Anyway! She was nice and actually said we should meet up sometime because she likes cooking Peruvian food (she's from Peru too) which means I could try it.

And lastly, the fanfic is still going, although now I wonder, if I write the whole thing before I start posting it do I posted it all at once or what? Please advise.

Right, now I really have to go.

Goodnight all!
