6:49pm: Indeed! For an event of this nature, I have typed a quick Flash fic - yeah I probably should have worked on my NaNo, but if I'd missed this auspious day I'd have kicked myself!

So...

009. November

‘If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything…’

That was what Marty Klein had told me and for the past two years I’d put great stock in that. It helped me do things that I’d never thought possible.

But tonight…

I peered into the mirror above the dresser, trying to tie my bow tie, the whole scene reminiscent of two years ago this very night.

I’d always though I could never be as nervous as I was back then, but I was wrong.

I could never be more nervous than I was tonight.

Finally I managed to get the bowtie looking respectable and I stepped back to check that my hair was indeed behaving itself.

Assured that it was, I opened the top drawer of the dresser to get the most important thing and tucked it safely into my pocket.

The drive to pick up Lorraine was nerve-wracking, at every traffic light I had to wipe my hands, which were sweating with anxiety, with a handkerchief. I’d be lucky not to get into an accident!

Lucky I was though, because now, I had Lorrie in the car with me as we drove to her favourite restaurant for our anniversary dinner.

Lorraine looks stunning as always, in a beautiful red dress, her brown eyes sparkle as she turns to talk to me about how well our Sophomore Year of college is going.

I wonder though, if she has any idea what I’m planning to ask, because I do want it to be a surprise, but not too much of a surprise! That way I’d have a bit of a clue about what her answer will be.

As we arrive at the restaurant, Lorrie gives me a gift…a red bow tie to match her dress, I didn’t exactly jump for joy over it though.

“It took me forever to get this to look right,” I pointed to my black bowtie.

Lorrie takes in a stride, untying my black bowtie and tying the red one around my neck in record time, before holding out her arm for me to take.

The maitre-de gives us a welcoming smile and leads us to our table, I’m pretty sure it’s mostly for Lorrie, I know I’m nothing to write home about!

The waiter takes our order and fills our glasses with water, and Lorrie reaches out and takes my hand in hers.

“I’m so glad you got reservations!” She gushes. “This place is always so booked up.”

I give her a wink. “Hey, I’m capable of planning ahead…er, this one time.”

Lorrie laughs her wonderful laugh and leans across the table to give me a quick kiss.

I consider asking her then and there, but I chicken out, and don’t get my nerve back until we’re eating desert, having spent the whole meal joking and talking, sneaking a few bites from each others plates (or rather Lorrie sneaking bites from mine, since I don’t even like salmon) and stealing a few kisses.

“Mmmm, I love strawberries,” Lorrie comments as she finishes up the last of her sundae, licking her lips, which makes me blush and makes her giggle.

I love her, I really do, so…well…

“Uh, Lorrie.”

“Mmm?”

“I…uh…um…love you,” my cheeks are so red I worry I’m going to spontaneously combust!

“Oh,” Lorrie coos, gazing at me, “that’s so sweet! I love you too, Georgie.” She bestows a strawberry flavoured kiss on my lips, it’s exhilarating (and I don’t even like strawberry!).

I take a deep breath and reach into my pocket, this is it…

“And…well…I know I’ll love you forever,” I speak in a huge rush. “Ever since we starting dating my life has got so much better. I know I owe most of it to you.”

Lorrie actually blushes! Very unusual for her!

“So, um…I want…I wondered…I hope you’ll be my wife,” I pull the jewellery box out of my pocket without dropping it, but fumble to open it, as Lorrie’s eyes widen.

I finally manage it, the ruby on the engagement ring sparkles in the light.

Lorrie gives a small shriek and for a second I think I made a terrible mistake, but she reaches out and grabs my hands.

“Oh my God! Do you mean it?”

I blink, she thinks I’d joke about something like this?!

“Of course, I mean it! Uh…does that mean –“

Yes!” Lorrie cries, giving me the most beautiful smile in the whole world. “Of course, I’ll marry you!”

It takes me a second to digest it…she said yes, she said yes!

Carefully I take the ring from the box and somehow not dropping it despite my trembling hand I slip it onto her left ring finger.

“It’s so beautiful!” Lorrie stares at the ring, then looks up back up at me, with glowing eyes. Before I know it she’s out of her chair and throwing her arms around me, hugging me hard and showering my face with kisses.

At that moment practically the entire restaurant bursts into applause, which usually would embarrass the Hell out of me.

But like that wonderful November 12th two years ago, I’m just too happy to care!

Awww...51 years ago today! I would have liked it to be 888 words, but eh I'm not gonna quibble.

OK, I've got to get going, firstly to let the wrist rest some more and second I have to get the lasagne I made up for dinner.

Probably won't be back since as I said writing is serverely curtailed, but hopes remain high that I shall write agin this weekend!
